More than just a flame-grilled chicken brand, Oporto is a tale of legacy, passion, and bold taste started on Bondi Beach in 1986. Originally a single store, what began as a modest fast-food brand with distinctive Portuguese-style cuisine and legendary chilli sauce has become rather famous.
The Man Behind the Flame: António Cerqueira
Portuguese immigrant António Cerqueira arrived in Australia dreaming and carrying a family recipe, founding Oporto. Inspired by the classic churrasco (charcoal chicken) from his native Oporto, Portugal, António opened his first restaurant in North Bondi. Fresh, simple ingredients and real taste were what he valued, and Oporto grew out from that core.
With lines out the door and fans begging for more, António’s signature marinade and handcrafted chilli sauce soon attracted a devoted following. Real food, done right, and served quicklywithout compromise—was his simple vision.
